This course will provide you with an understanding of what basic life support is and the responsibilities you have in carrying it out. This includes instruction on how to carry out a primary survey (DR ABCD), place an individual into the recovery position, and perform CPR. It will also provide you with insight into how to safely use a defibrillator. You will be provided with information on how to recognise and respond to an individual who is choking and guidance on how to support an individual who is at risk of anaphylaxis. Finally, you will learn how to administer basic first aid in a range of situations, including in response to shock, stroke, and heart attacks.
This course has been written with reference to current guidance from the Resuscitation Council found in the 2021 Resuscitation Guidelines. It will not provide you with the practical competencies required to effectively administer basic life support or first aid, and should be used in conjunction with in-person practical training.
